National Agenda for Worker Safety and Health

Agenda Nacional para la Seguridad y Salud de los Trabajadores

OVERVIEW:

After nearly a year of COVID, workers around the country are sick, dying and broke. Together, we can turn this around: save lives, get healthy, and get back to work in an environment with greater safety precautions and lower risk. The National Agenda for Worker Safety and Health, released on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, was developed by workers, unions, safety advocates and worker organizations. It brings together ideas, based on real experience in our workplaces, to confront the COVID-19 pandemic and other hazards in our workplaces.

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2021 was a National Agenda for Worker Safety and Health Day of Action. We are clear: as workers we are united to keep employers and government accountable in doing everything possible to ensure that we can earn our living with respect, and return home safe, and well. You can watch a summary video of the Day of Action here.

KEY MESSAGES:

  • After nearly a year of COVID, workers are sick, dying and broke. Together, we can turn this around: save lives, get healthy, and get back to work in an environment with greater safety precautions and lower risk.
  • Our National Agenda, based on real workplace experiences, provides ideas, tools and resources for a bold plan to build worker power and make our workplaces safer.  The #COSHAgenda was developed by workers, unions, safety advocates and worker organizations.
  • So far, OSHA has failed miserably during COVID, the most severe workplace health crisis in our lifetimes. Together, we can change that -- and make sure workers win the protections they deserve. That’s why we’ve developed this National Agenda.
  • We want stronger safety laws and tougher enforcement; protection against illegal employer retaliation, and a real plan to beat this deadly virus.
  • To save lives, we must confront the legacy of systemic racism that puts immigrants and workers of color at greater risk of illness, injury and death. Discriminatory practices have been used by those with power and privilege to divide us and prevent all workers from winning the fair treatment we deserve.
  • Change can and must come from this administration, and the COSH Movement will make sure it does. COVID won't stop in our communities if we don’t stop it in our workplaces.

SAMPLE LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Sample letter to editor:

To the editor:

After a year of COVID-19, U.S. workers are sick, broke and dying. According to one recent California study, licensed nurses were 34 percent more likely to die in 2020 than before the pandemic. For construction laborers the risk of dying jumped by 50 percent; for cooks, the figure is 60 percent.  (OR INSERT YOUR LOCAL EXAMPLE)

There have been multiple COVID-19 outbreaks among agricultural, meatpacking and nursing home workers and many others. But the agency in charge of workplace safety  -- the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been missing in action. No new workplace rules, not enough inspections, and often only minimal fines for employers who completely failed to protect workers.

The Biden-Harris Administration has taken positive first steps, but more needs to be done. Frontline workers need a mandatory workplace standard to protect against infectious disease, protection from retaliation by employers, paid sick and family leave, and safe, effective testing, tracking and vaccine protocols.

The National Agenda for Worker Safety and Health, released on Wednesday, February 3 by the National COSH Network (and - you can add your organization, if applicable), details steps to reduce the spread of disease and make our workplaces safer. We all rely on frontline workers; we all should hold our elected officials accountable for turning this agenda into action.
