Assess Your Health and Safety Management System – Using ANSI Z10

Diane Matthew Brown, Health and Safety Specialist, has been with the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) for over twenty two years, fifteen with the International’s health and safety program. Diane provides technical guidance and training to all public employees in the areas of: developing health and safety committees, emergency planning, ergonomics, excavation safety, hazard communication, infectious diseases, worker’s compensation and many other safety related topics. She is a full member of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z10-Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) standards committee. Ms. Matthew Brown holds a Certified Environmental, Health and Safety Trainer (CET) certification from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.  She received her Masters of Science in Safety Management from West Virginia University in December 1999.

James Howe, CSP  is currently the president of Safety Solutions, a consulting firm specializing in machinery and equipment risk assessment, health and safety management system improvement, accident investigation and regulatory compliance. Jim retired from the United Auto Workers Union after 20 years, where he was the Assistant Director of the Health and Safety Department. Jim has conducted more than 300 plant inspections and more than 85 fatality inspections. Jim has been a member of a number of ANSI committees related to machinery safeguarding, lockout, robot safety and risk assessment. In addition, Jim is the chair of the ANSI/AIHA Z10, the Occupational Health and Safety Management System standard. Jim was selected as the Safety Professional of the Year for the State of Michigan in 1997.
