The Houston Initiative on Worker Safety (Houston COSH) brings together labor, legal, religious and civic leaders who are concerned about educating and advocating for safe and healthful workplace conditions, particularly on behalf of the most vulnerable workers in the greater Houston and Gulf Coast area.

Houston COSH is part of the National Council on Occupational Safety and Health (COSH), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization comprised of some 27 local and regional member COSH groups committed to improving worker safety and health. COSH was formed in 1972, soon after the Occupational Safety and Health Act was passed. The mission of COSH is to promote worker safety and health through the following activities:

(1) Training and Education: Houston COSH conducts training programs, primarily aimed at vulnerable workers, on basic workers= rights under OSHA and on a wide range of technical health and safety topics for specific work settings.

(2) Advocacy: National and local COSH carry out a variety of advocacy campaigns promoting public policies and services to protect workers= health and safety.

(3) Public Education/Awareness: COSH conducts public education campaigns on a wide range of issues related to workplace safety and health.

The Houston Initiative, one of the newest groups in the COSH network, has been active since 2003 and has held numerous trainings for vulnerable workers, including those with limited English, in hazardous jobs, and young workers. Programs offered to date include:

# Basic OSHA Rights Training – presented for day laborers at Day Labor Centers and other places where laborers gather to seek work, Federation of Labor Youth, ARCA, Youth workers at Cesar Chavez High School and CEP Alternative High School, the NAACP Family Technology Center self-sufficiency program participants, and neighborhood and apartment gatherings.

# Advanced Scaffolding Safety Training for Day Laborers.

# Periodic train-the-trainer seminars for teams of Houston COSH members.

# Presentations for the media, regional forums, and labor organizing campaigns.

# Participation in the annual National COSH Conference and Occupational Health and Safety activist forum. Houston COSH sponsored the 2005 meeting.

Houston COSH invites all interested people to attend our monthly COSH Leadership team meetings and become involved. Please contact Dr. Diana Dale, Houston COSH coordinator.
