CSB Shut out of CT Power Plant Explosion Site

Several news outlets today report that the mayor of Middletown, CT is blocking US Chemical Safety Board investigators from the site of the power plant explosion there that killed five workers on Sunday. The CSB’s mission is to investigate such disasters so that we can learn lessons to avoid such tragedies in the future. It is critical to their success that they be allowed prompt access to the site.
Mayor Guiliano should let the CSB do its job. Word has it that the US House Committee on Education and Labor will be conducting a hearing to look into the causes of the explosion. They should also look at the question of whether the CSB is being allowed to do its federally chartered job. The workers who lost their lives in this tragedy deserve to have a full investigation of the case. Why is Mayor Guiliano standing in the way?
